Do I have to prove my health and will I need a medical?

You might have to prove your health if you have a questionable medical history.

If you choose to apply for an insurance policy, you will need to fill out an application form, and that will contain questions about your health both past and present and, several questions about your parent's health record.

From your answers, the Insurance Company will decide more information is required about your health. If the insurance provider does require more information, they will usually write, with your approval, to your GP for further information. Dependent upon your health or what your GP says, the Insurance Company may also decide that it wants a second opinion or an up to date assessment of your health, in which case they will ask you to have a medical.

A medical can take one of two forms: a short visit to your home by a medical representative from the insurance company, or a more detailed assessment at Doctors/Consultants consulting rooms. In either case, the Insurance Company meet the costs of the medical.

The medical report is the property of the Insurance Company and you will not be able to access the results. However, they do identify some medical concerns, the Insurer or Doctor will normally make you aware of it.

Finally, we should remind you that it's important to be truthful when you complete your Application form. If you do not answer truthfully, or are "economical with the truth", then any subsequent claim will be invalidated.
